Evolution of the Hall Coefficient and the Peculiar Electronic Structure of the Cuprate Superconductors
Although the Hall coefficient R_H is an informative transport property of
metals and semiconductors, its meaning in the cuprate superconductors has been
ambiguous because of its unusual characteristics. Here we show that a
systematic study of R_H in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals over a wide
doping range establishes a qualitative understanding of its peculiar evolution,
which turns out to reflect a two-component nature of the electronic structure
caused by an unusual development of the Fermi surface recently uncovered by
photoemission experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, final version appeared in Phys. Rev. Let
Fully gapped superconductivity in Ni-pnictide superconductors BaNi2As2 and SrNi2P2
We have performed low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity
measurements on the Ni-pnictide superconductors BaNiAs
(=0.7 K and SrNiP (=1.4 K). The temperature
dependences and of the two compounds are similar to the
results of a number of s-wave superconductors. Furthermore, the concave field
responses of the residual for BaNiAs rules out the presence of
nodes on the Fermi surfaces. We postulate that fully gapped superconductivity
could be universal for Ni-pnictide superconductors. Specific heat data on
BaLaNiAs shows a mild suppression of and
relative to BaNiAs.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in J. Phys.: Conf. Se
Particle creation in Bose--Einstein condensates: Theoretical formulation based on conserving gapless mean field theory
We formulate particle creation phenomena in Bose--Einstein condensates in
terms of conserving gapless mean field theory for weakly interacting Bose
gases. The particle creation spectrum is calculated by rediagonalizing the
Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in mean field theory. The conservation
implies that quasiparticle creation is accompanied by quantum backreaction to
the condensates. Particle creation in this mean field theory is found to be
equivalent to that in quantum field theory (QFT) in curved spacetime. An
expression is obtained for an effective metric affected by quantum
backreaction. The formula for the particle creation spectrum obtained in terms
of QFT in curved spacetime is shown to be the same as that given by
rediagonalizing the BdG Hamiltonian.Comment: 9 pages, typos correcte
"Spin-Flop" Transition and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}: Unexpectedly Strong Spin-Charge Coupling in Electron-Doped Cuprates
We use transport and neutron-scattering measurements to show that a
magnetic-field-induced transition from noncollinear to collinear spin
arrangement in adjacent CuO_{2} planes of lightly electron-doped
Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.01) crystals affects significantly both
the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity. In the high-field collinear state,
the magnetoresistance (MR) does not saturate, but exhibits an intriguing
four-fold-symmetric angular dependence, oscillating from being positive at
B//[100] to being negative at B//[110]. The observed MR of more than 30% at low
temperatures induced by a modest modification of the spin structure indicates
an unexpectedly strong spin-charge coupling in electron-doped cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the analyzing power of proton-carbon elastic scattering in the CNI region at RHIC
The single transverse spin asymmetry, A_N, of the p-carbon elastic scattering
process in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region was measured using an
ultra thin carbon target and polarized proton beam in the Relativistic Heavy
Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). In 2004, data were
collected to calibrate the p-carbon process at two RHIC energies (24 GeV, 100
GeV). A_N was obtained as a function of momentum transfer -t. The results were
fit with theoretical models which allow us to assess the contribution from a
hadronic spin flip amplitude.Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of the 16th International Spin
